Saudi Arabia Day of Rage; Japan Quake

Day of Rage in Saudi Arabia should prove to be interesting. So far it is very calm, however, with a major portion of US Oil coming from the country---this could spook the market quickly if it gets in gear.

The top five sources of US crude oil imports for December were Canada (2,064 thousand barrels per day), Mexico (1,223 thousand barrels per day), Saudi Arabia (1,076 thousand barrels per day), Nigeria (1,024 thousand barrels per day), and Venezuela (825 thousand barrels per day).

Also, keep an eye toward Japan. With one of the largest quakes in the last 100 years worldwide, it will take weeks, if not months, to access the true infrastructure damage. BOJ has indicated that it will continue to pump money into the economy; however, with interest rate at 0% (and they have been for a long while) how do you inspire growth and lending? What can the pent-up demand be for yen denominated lending?

Bottom line---VERY LITTLE UPSIDE TO ANYTHING!

Oil Effect....

With oil up another $1.00 plus today, what industries stand to profit? The short answer is NONE. In fact, the oil spike is likely to kill the "recovery." Basically, everything will cost more due to the increase cost of transportation.

If there are any short term winners, financials temporarily benefit due to increase in bond prices. But, on the banking side, real estate assets likely to continue to decline...ultimately, weaker balance sheets.

The stock market is off over 200 points in two days, and the S&P is off almost 2.5% since February 18th. This is the death nail to the "recovery" which was at best paid for with "funny money" (the Gold and Silver market have been shouting this for the last several months).

Quick question, what sector in the economy can recover in the face of increasing oil prices?

Microsoft's Bing search engine has overtaken Yahoo to become the 2nd most popular internet search engine in the US after Google.

According to a report released by Nielson, Microsoft search offerings, which include Bing, MSN and Windows Live, now hold 13.9 per cent of the search market share, more than the 13.1 per cent held by Yahoo.

Since signing a deal with Microsoft to power Yahoo's search engine, it was only a matter of time before Bing surpassed Yahoo. The search deal was a part of Yahoo's plans to focus on more important things like content and advertisement.

The Nielson report takes into consideration only those searches which have been conducted by typing directly into the search box, and not those triggered by user activity on the web.

Check your Bing results. Bing is more actual content driven than Google. Bing also is a great deal more dependent on Title tags, etc...If you need help!

Domain Names,Misspelled Searches

Todd Hunnicutt here. I occasionally do searches on all kinds of topics to see what the search engines key off on a site. You can do intentional misspellings like Tod Hunnicut for Todd Hunnicutt or Columba for Columbia and the search engine will suggest the correct spelling. This is occasionally very helpful especially if you have a multiple spelling like Todd Hunnicutt could be Tod Hunicut or Todd Honeycut or Tod...well you get the point.

Anyway, you should also check multiple spellings of your business or product. You will be suprised on just how much information you will find on these "misspelled" searches. Try it!

Also, one last thought on the name game. When buying a domain name, especially a main marketing name, buy (or at least check) the "extensions" (.com, .net, .org, etc...). More than one person has bought a domain only to find an inappropriate site shares a similar domain name. So check it out---the extensions as well as likely "misunderstanding" (like if you have houseforyou.com check house4u.com). You be glad you do it before you potential client.

Solicited or unsolicited recommendation or testimonial from an entity (usually a customer or user) other than the manufacturer and seller of a product or service.

Many of us today are shocked over the growth of social media---Facebook, twitter and the like. Facebook, for example, has over 500 million users or more than the entire population of the US. How did something grow this big, this valuable, essentially overnight?

I think one of the main reasons at least from a marketing perspective is this idea of the "third party endorsement." Let's face it. We no longer live in a geographic community. We shop on Ebay and Amazon. We go online and buy things from literally continents away; its shipped in on UPS and we have it in our den all without leaving our house. That is our modern world.

So, from a business perspective and a customer perspective, the social media sites now fulfill the "old reputation void" that used to be present in small town life. Every businessman knows that a disparaging remark on your Facebook page or a negative response on Ebay can literally kill your business. So, we as clients now demand this "accountability loop" or third party endorsement to insure accountability from the businesses we deal with.

Today many domain vendors such as Godaddy, SEDO and SnapNames offer existing domains for sale at auction. Often you can purchase domains that have "traffic" at auction for a very reasonable price (often less than $100). Assuming you find a good match (url-wise) and content wise, check out the current site to insure the content is not offensive or so specialized that it is meaningless to what you attempting to create (highly specialized traffic in general is not translatable into traffic continuity if the content changes). In addition, check the Internet Archive (at http://www.archive.org/) to insure that the site hasn't changed completely recently so that you know what your buying.

Since these domains already have traffic and are established (not brand new domains), they can index faster with the search engines and get your message out faster!

Times have changed...

As I watch CNBC and like programs, the "D" word is starting to be mentioned. I think in many ways it is at least a healthy sign that people are at least starting to see the scope of the issue. I think a great many more people will realize this over the coming weeks with the likely nationalization of Citicorp and Bank of America. I think the proverbial "writting is on the way." Regardless of the administrations statements about 'prefering a private banking system,' over the next few weeks, I think the scope of the problem will make it evident that the banks are flat broke. In addition, the moral hazard issues of people not paying their loans to get government deals will provide the final blows. I hope the resolution will come quickly as I think the biggest potential problem could be the 1930s type "run on the bank." I pray for calm and for good governmental leadership in this perilous time of our history. We are at a real cross road in our country's history.

New Years Thought on Websites

1. Write some new content on your page--keep it fresh, new, short and relevent

2. Check some keyword buys at http://adwords.google.com. This is easy and Google will walk you through this. Like the stocks on the stockmarket, you can get a lot more bang for the buck right now

3. Ad some fresh pictures and tell your story in a new way!

Enjoying watching TJ and Maddie "wii out" tonight. TJ with his skateboard balance has quickly come in and claimed several of the records though we have had an entire week to learn the games. I have no doubt by the time he heads back to G'vegas for work on Sunday. He is "cat like" on his feet and has balance plus.Of course, Maddie is not to be outdone either. She still holds the record for the "ski jump" and may just fight TJ off for the crown there. But, the rest of us are DOOMED.

Alex has a ski trip tomorrow and I only wished I felt as good about his skiing as I do TJs. Or to put it differently, I wish I felt as good about his skiing as I do his musical ability---check HUNNI on mySpace (he's really talented).

Saw my Granny and Papa B last night. I really feel sorry for folks who dont have Grandparents--sage wisdom, optimism, Godly values, and all wrapped up in a loving smile; that's what my Grandparents are. They are the kind of folks you can tell a problem to and they will clear your path. I have been so blessed by the Good Lord to have had all my Grandparents durring my life time--my Mom's folks and my Dad's folks. I learned a great deal from them---in both matters of the head and the heart.
